ABOUT US
The Ka-Zoo Angels is a member-driven organization that seeks to improve our community, state and region through early-stage investments in start-up and rapid-growth companies. Our members are accredited investors who have achieved success in a variety of industries including pharmaceuticals and biotech, advanced manufacturing, technology and digital marketing, and consumer packaged goods.
We are part of the Michigan Capital Network, and affiliated with their other member angel groups. Investment opportunities are typically presented to all affiliates, therefore increasing the investor pool in each deal. The MCN further increases the potential investment pool by frequently syndicating deals with other Michigan-based investment funds. Finally, for appropriate later-stage opportunities, MCN has established venture funds that may also invest alongside the angel groups.
MEET THE DIRECTOR
Mike Gerfen
Ka-Zoo Angels Director
Mike Gerfen is the Founder and Managing Partner of BG2. BG2, located in Southwest Michigan, provides capital, knowledge and experience to early-stage companies primarily focused in technology, life sciences and advanced manufacturing.
Previously, Mike began his career at Biggs|Gilmore, and in 2000, led an internal management group that purchased the agency from its previous owners. Over the next 13 years, Biggs|Gilmore transitioned from a regional advertising agency into one of the country’s leading independent digital agencies. Biggs|Gilmore was acquired by WPP and subsequently merged into VMLY&R. Mike then served as Executive Director and on the North American Executive Committee of VMLY&R, one of the world’s foremost brand connection agencies.
After leaving the agency world, Mike pursued his passion for helping startups by joining the Michigan Capital Network and founding BG2. Mike has served on numerous community and industry boards, and is currently on the Dean’s Advisory Committee of the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University.
MEETING INFORMATION
Ka-Zoo Angels meets the second Wednesday of every month from 4:00 to 6:00pm in Kalamazoo to review deals for investment opportunities, attend educational workshops, and participate in networking sessions.
